More about Lonwabo

TOWNSHIP LAD WINS BURSARY TO STUDY OPERA IN ITALY
From a young age Lonwabo Mose (21) from Gugulethu has had a passion for singing, first in choirs and later for the great opera arias,
Lonwabo is rapidly becoming known as a remarkably talented dramatic baritone. An indication of his talent is that he has been awarded a bursary to attend the prestigious Saluzzo Opera Academy in Italy in June/July.
Lonwabo grew up in poverty in a single parent household in Gugulethu and Cala in the Eastern Cape. He developed a love of choral music at a young age which grew into a passion for opera. While still at school he sang as a soloist – and took many prizes – with the award-winning Fezeka High School Choir and Joyful Harmonies Youth Choir, both directed by Monde Mdingi.
He is studying with renowned vocal coach, composer and founder of the Ubuntu Opera Company, Juan Burgers, who predicts a stellar future for him.
At a recent fundraising concert, a capacity audience gave a standing ovation for each of the five arias he performed.
Lonwabo’s tuition and accommodation are covered by the bursary. A visitor from the USA who heard him sing during a township tour a few years back has sponsored his air ticket. He has managed to raise funds or receive sponsorship for other expenses through concerts but is still short of R15000 (depending on the strength of the rand) for his daily expenses such as meals which are not covered by his scholarship.
